PhDTalks | Assessment and retrofitting of deep foundations of existing bridges

13 June 2023 @ 17:15 - 18:30

We are glad to announce that our next PhDTalks Seminar will be held on Tuesday 13th June in Room 2.1.3 (Building 2), from 5:15 pm to 6:30 pm CET

PhDTalks is a series of seminars and discussions between PhD students. The events are aimed at providing a place to network and get in contact with many of the projects developed in our department.

Speaker Matteo Corigliano will talk about “Assessment and retrofitting of deep foundations of existing bridges”

At the end of each event a small refreshment funded by the department will be available.

Abstract:

Most of the infrastructures in Europe are approaching their design life and, therefore, their safety has to be reassessed according to the more severe design standards.  Nowadays the foundations of existing bridges are verified using models based on simplified assumptions, which make the retrofitting measures often unsustainable. The ultimate goal of the research is the introduction of a tool, allowing a rapid and reliable evaluation of the foundation performance and providing hints for the most rational retrofitting. To this aim, the results of finite element numerical analyses on a real case study have been theoretically interpreted, obtaining significant insight in the mechanical response of pile groups. The innovative tool under development will lead to a more aware and sustainable design of bridge foundations retrofitting measures.

Speaker’s bio:

Matteo is PhD candidate in Structural Seismic and Geotechnical Engineering and has a Master degree in Civil Engineering – Geotechnics. His mainreserach interest is the interaction between soil and critical infrastructures (bridges, emnbankments and tunnels). He is now focused on the assessment and retrofitting of deep foundations of existing bridges. He spends his free time playing tennis, skiing and honing his photography skills.
