Creep Buckling Behaviour of Concrete-filled Steel Tubular Arches

23 October 2023 @ 17:00 - 18:30

A seminar entitled: “Creep Buckling Behavior of Concrete-filled Steel Tubular Arches” will be held on Monday 23 October at 5.00 pm in Grandori Room (Building 4 – p.za Leonardo da Vinci, 32 – Milan), by Yue Geng , Professor of Structural Engineering at Harbin Institute of Technology, China.

Abstract

The use of concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) arches is becoming popular for bridge applications because of the increased load-carrying capacity, convenience in construction, and attractive appearance. Till 2023, more than 600 CFST arch bridges have been built in China. With the improvements in material and construction techniques, the span of newly built CFST arch bridges continues to increase, and the longest span has reached to 600 m. As the span of CFST arch bridges increases, the time-dependent behaviour of the core concrete in arch ribs becomes significant, leading to considerably increase in arch deflections, stress redistributions between steel and core concrete sections, and even instability problems for the arches. This significant influence may trigger possible instability problems in slender CFST arches if not accurately accounted for. This presentation gains insight into the stability and creep buckling behavior of CFST arch bridges and investigates the key issues in the stability analysis of CFST arches, including the residual stress, the confinement effect, the creep effect of the core concrete, and the initial stress. This presentation also provides an accurate method to predict the time-dependent response of CFST arch bridges.

Yue Geng is Professor of Structural Engineering at Harbin Institute of Technology, China. Prof Geng’s principal research interests lie in the composite structures and in concrete materials, with particular research expertise on their time-dependent behaviours. Prof Yue Geng has co-authored 1 textbook, 3 book chapters and 40 SCI journal papers, and is good at both structural and material testing, numerical modelling and the development of design methods. She has been granted 10 patents and software copyrights by the Chinese government. The research results have been applied to the refined design of 15 long-span or high-rise structures. She is co-chairing the Chinese design standard for recycled concrete composite structures that issued by the China Steel Construction Society. She is included in the working group for the ‘Concrete materials terminology’ standard ISO/TC 71/AHG 1 and 7 other Chinese designing codes for composite structures or recycled concrete materials. She is the editor of the International Journal of Concrete Structures and Materials. She was awarded the first prizes for scientific and technological progress by the Hei Long Jiang Province Government (2nd contributor) and by the China Steel Construction Society (3rd contributor).
