Behaviour of CFST Columns with Localized Corrosion Damage
24 October 2023 @ 15:30 - 16:30
A seminar entitled: “Behavior of CFST Columns with Localized Corrosion Damage” will be held on Tuesday 24 October at 3.30 pm in Grandori Room (Building 4 – p.za Leonardo da Vinci, 32 – Milan), by Chen Jia, postdoc from Harbin Institute of Technology, China.
Abstract
Due to the outstanding structural performance, concrete-filled steel tubes (CFST) are extensively applied in contemporary structures in marine towers, bridge piers, and coastal platforms. CFSTs can be subjected to localized corrosion damage during their long-time service, because of the metallic properties of the steel tube and the corrosive medium in harsh working environments. Localized corrosion damage would cause a detrimental effect on CFST columns since it induces the continuous loss of the cross-section area of the steel tube, as well as the loss of the confinement on the core concrete. This presentation will show the experimental and numerical investigations on CFSTs with simulated localized corrosion damage, discuss corrosion-induced deterioration of load-carrying capacity of CFSTs, and finally introduce the methods for predicting the residual strength of localized corroded CFSTs.
