Title: “2021 Haiti Earthquake: overview of the deadliest seismic event of 2021”

ABSTRACT
At 9:30am of the 14th August 2021 a 7.2 magnitude seismic event strikes Haiti. The humanitarian response and rescue activities are compromised by Hurricane Grace, that hits only two days later. Considering the ongoing pandemic and the political crisis caused by the assassination of the president, the emergency is multifaceted and particularly complex.

Six months later the deadliest seismic event of 2021 we’ll go on a journey to Haiti: starting from the characteristics of the local built environment we’ll see how it behaved and what are the lessons that can be learnt. In fact, it’s through the observation of the damage caused by past earthquakes that we improve our understanding of how the structures react to the seismic shaking. By doing so, we’ll also value the humanitarian side of engineering and the key role that engineers have as communicators and enforcers of life saving policies.

CV
Giulia Jole Sechi graduated in 2013 in civil structural engineering from Politecnico di Milano, with a thesis partially written in Peru on earth dwellings reinforced with used car tyre straps. She then lived two years in Chad and three years in New Zealand, where she worked on the 2010-2011 Christchurch and 2016 Kaikoura earthquakes. Giulia also worked in Nepal with UNDP for the 2015 Gorkha earthquake, before going to Tanzania and India. She is now working as structural engineering consultant for Miyamoto International on the 2021 Haiti earthquake response and is undertaking her PhD on the role of digital technology in informal settlements construction at Universitat Internacional de Catalunya, Barcelona.
