PhDTalks | Numerical simulation of 3D Concrete Printing: challenges and opportunities

16 May 2023 @ 17:15 - 18:30

We are glad to announce that our next PhDTalks Seminar will be held on Tuesday 16th May in Room 2.1.3 (Building 2), from 5:15 pm to 6:30 pm CET

PhDTalks is a series of seminars and discussions between PhD students. The events are aimed at providing a place to network and get in contact with many of the projects developed in our department.

Speaker Giacomo Rizzieri will talk about “Numerical simulation of 3D Concrete Printing: challenges and opportunities”

At the end of each event a small refreshment funded by the department will be available.

Abstract

3D Concrete Printing (3DCP) is rapidly gaining momentum in the building industry, as it could be the way to achieve a fully automatized and more sustainable construction process. However, before a large-scale adoption of this technology takes place, it is necessary to address some issues both at the practical and numerical levels. The development of reliable computational tools would provide a better understanding of the printing process, while also enabling the prediction, in a design framework, of its outcomes. In this talk, it is presented a numerical model to simulate the extrusion and layer deposition phases of cementitious materials. The model assimilates fresh concrete to a homogeneous weakly-compressible fluid and solves the Navier-Stokes equations in a Lagrangian framework with the Particle Finite Element Method (PFEM). Different numerical challenges will be addressed regarding the imposition of time-dependent moving boundary conditions, the accurate treatment of inter-layer contact and the reduction of the computational cost.

Speaker’s bio:

Giacomo is a PhD Candidate in Structural, Seismic and Geotechnical Engineering (37° cycle) at Politecnico di Milano. He has a Master of Science in Structural Engineering obtained in 2021 at Politecnico di Milano. Currently, he is in the second year of his PhD and he is involved in the development of new computational tools to simulate 3D Concrete Printing. In his free time Giacomo enjoys hiking, reading and watercolor painting.
